Our Programs

Girls Inc.’s research-based curricula and relationship-focused programs are delivered by trained, mentoring professionals in positive, all-girl environments. They spark girls’ interest in science, technology, engineering, and math, promote drug and pregnancy prevention, foster self-esteem, and teach skills such as stress management, financial literacy, and community leadership. Some last just one day, others up to 12 weeks, but all are designed to empower girls to transform their self-image and realize their potential as friends, leaders, and entrepreneurs.

Academic Enrichment and Support

Girls Inc. NSV exists to empower girls and young women by enabling them to learn new information, acquire and develop skills, build self-confidence, and, in all phases of their involvement, have fun.

Eureka!

Girls Inc. Eureka! is a five year program with a STEM-based approach to engaging and empowering 8th - 12th grade girls to see themselves as an important part of the workforce of the future. During the Eureka! program, girls get to participate in a variety of exciting and compelling activities that explore the cutting edge world of STEM - nanosciences, robotics, DNA research, forensic science - through hands-on experiences in a college campus environment. With complementary activities in sports and physical fitness, healthy living, and financial literacy, Eureka! fully fosters educational, professional and personal development.

Girls Inc. Literacy Initiative

The Girls Inc. Literacy Initiative addresses the literacy-based needs of girls in grades K-3 by using a model that involves working closely with schools to align programming with school-day learning. This program inspires girls to use reading as a tool to discover new and exciting worlds and to learn new information about topics that interest them. Girls learn to think critically by forming connections between stories and their own lives, identifying with characters in books, and examining messages that books convey.

Operation SMART

Girls develop enthusiasm for and skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Through hands-on activities, girls explore, ask questions, persist, and solve problems. By interacting with women and men pursuing STEM careers, girls come to view these careers as exciting and realistic options for themselves. Components of the program include: Eureka!; Girls Dig It; and Thinking SMART.

Art Expedition

An art education program for girls, ages 9-14, that includes hands-on activities, family activities, and community events. Through participation in Art Expedition girls will become familiar with the basic vocabulary and principles of art through exciting, discovery-based learning experiences. Girls will discover artists from diverse cultures throughout the ages and learn that there is an underlying purpose behind all art forms, which permeates all cultures and seeks universal expression.

LEAP

LEAP, or Life Empowerment Action Plan, is a unique program in which girls, ages 6-18, have the opportunity to celebrate their lives -- a chance to take pride in their successes and to focus on their futures with confidence and strength. The LEAP program provides a fun and nurturing environment in which girls can build self-confidence and develop the skills necessary to understand and gain access to their rights. With the support of adults who believe in their ability to achieve their highest aspirations, LEAP gives girls and young women the right to applaud themselves!

Girls Dig It

Girls Dig It is an archaeology program for girls ages 12-14 that introduces girls to the dynamic interdisciplinary world of archaeology. The program goals are to help girls explore what archaeologists do, as well as what one needs to study and master to become an archaeologist. Girls will learn the fundamentals and the vocabulary of archaeology, how ethics are a vital part of archaeological investigations, and discover the hidden histories of their communities.

Healthy Living

Girls deserve a supportive environment for developing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and they deserve to be involved in decisions about their health. A positive youth development approach can be key to equipping girls with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and support for maintaining a positive sense of self and for being healthy today and throughout their lives.

Annual Camping Trip

Each summer, North State girls are invited to join the Girls Inc. NSV Camping Trip to Lassen Volcanic National Park. This trip is chaperoned by Girls Inc. Mentors and volunteers. Girls who attend will learn about hiking, planning an outdoor adventure, learn outdoor survival skills, and have the opportunity to attend park activities that study volcanoes and the Lassen Park area.

Friendly PEERsuasion

Girls develop skills to resist pressure to use harmful substances such as alcohol, tobacco, household chemicals, and other drugs.  In this peer-education program, girls ages 11 to 14 learn healthy ways to manage stress and confront peer, media, and other pressures and then assume the roles of PEERsuaders for young girls.

Healthy Sexuality

Girls acquire the knowledge and skills for taking charge of and making informed, thoughtful decisions about their sexual health. Exploring values, practicing responses in different situations, and thinking about their futures help girls identify ways and reasons to avoid early pregnancy and prevent sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.

Sporting Chance

Girls learn to appreciate an active lifestyle as they develop movement and athletic skills, cooperative and competitive spirit, health awareness, and interest in sports and adventure.  Girls also explore career opportunities related to sports and experience the benefits and excitement of taking healthy risks.

Mind+Body

Girls Inc. Mind+Body supports and promotes the whole health of girls ages 6 to 18, using a philosophy which recognizes that many factors, including physical and mental wellness, contribute to girls’ health. Consequently, the Initiative focuses on four critical content areas: Physical Activity, Body Image, Nutrition, and Stress Management.

Life Skills

Our Programs are designed to empower girls to transform their self-image and realize their full potential.

Economic Literacy

Girls learn about money and the economy, including how to manage, invest, and save money and how to help others through philanthropy. As girls explore how the economy affects everyone locally and globally, they develop skills critical to being financially savvy and to become economically independent adults.

Leadership and Community Action

Girls build their leadership skills and create lasting social change through community action projects. In Discovery®, girls ages 9 to 11 celebrate the heritage of girls and women as leaders and develop awareness of themselves as community resources and trustees of the common good. In In Our Own Hands®, girls ages 12 to 14 deepen their understanding of girls and women as social change agents and of leadership as a collective process grounded in belonging to and having responsibility for one's community.

Media Literacy

Girls increase their awareness of the scope and power of the media and the effects of media messages on girls and women. They learn to analyze critically what they see and hear in the media, advocate for change in entertainment, news, and advertising media, and create images that are more realistic and reflective of their lives. They also learn about media-related careers and the positive use of the media.

Project BOLD

Girls learn skills and strategies to lead safer lives in their homes, in relationships, in their communities, and online. Girls learn specific self-defense techniques and how to seek out and talk to caring adults about personal violence. Older girls also take on a community action project to advocate for a safer world for all women and girls.

Fostering Futures

Fostering Futures is a comprehensive personal asset development program designed specifically for girls in foster care and other out-of-home placements. The lessons are hands-on and interactive, including weekly “partnership sessions” wherein girls and their caregivers complete activities and exercises together, under the guidance of a Girls Inc. staff member. This program fosters teamwork, support and collaboration among girls and their families. Fostering Futures introduces foster families to the concept of positive thinking and resilience, and will increase opportunities for girls to communicate with their caregivers.
